Annotations for Kill All Your Friends Live Demo

Lyric: Because we all want to party when a funeral ends
Annotation:
Most funerals end in a wake or reception where people get together and remember the dead, which could be the literal meaning of this line. We only honor the dead for a little while — as soon as “the funeral ends” we forget about them and go back to our normal happy lives as if nothing had happened. He’s probably despising the people who do so because they don’t think death or the people who have died are important enough to remember. Heck, MCR themselves are guilty of this — the music video for their song “Helena” ends in a dance sequence.

Lyric: Well, she’s always going on
About the town you grew up in
Annotation:
The narrator’s second victim is described as being nostalgic, often talking about their hometown. It is unknown whether she is based on a real person or if she is entirely fictional. MCR themselves hail from two different towns in New Jersey — Gerard, Mikey, and Frank grew up in Belleville, while Ray is from Kearny. The “you” is likely referring to the girl he’s gonna kill and the girl he’s trying to get closer to, since he is talking to the latter throughout the song.

Lyric: Well, he’s always going on
 About who he knows
Annotation:
The narrator is describing his first victim here: a social butterfly who brags about his connections. It is unknown whether he is based on a real person or if he is entirely fictional.

Lyric: I think your politics stink
Annotation:
MCR have never been afraid to discuss politics in their work, particularly their distaste for the popular opinion. One specific group they’re not a fan of? The Kennedys, an American dynasty boasting two presidents. Don’t give a fuck about the Kennedys Fuck like a Kennedy Gerard has even recreated an iconic picture taken after the assassination of John F. Kennedy with his wife Lyn-Z Way.

Lyric: Somebody buy me a drink, I think that I’m leaving
Annotation:
Gerard’s never afraid to admit he’s living a sharp life. This is likely referencing Gerard’s struggle with alcoholism and substance abuse. He was often drunk during performances throughout both the Bullets and Revenge eras, and relapsed into his old habits around the Danger Days era. His relapse was one of the driving forces behind the band’s breakup.

Lyric: ’Cause we are all just drowning, man
Annotation:
Drowning in their own problems and woes. Drowning is also a way of dying, so he could be saying that everyone is dying and everyone dies in the end.

Lyric: Well, gather ’round, I’ll tell you all a story
 About heartache and woe
Annotation:
This song starts with an opener reminiscent of “The End,” and it may have even been a b-side to the track. Both songs seem to introduce the listener to The Patient, so it’s possible that there’s a connection. Well, come one, come all to this tragic affair Gather ‘round, piggies, and kiss this goodbye
